Equality & Access Standards

The new ‘Equality and Access Standard Initiative’ (EASI) has evolved from the former Charter scheme; originally devised by disabled and D/deaf people to consider what true accessibility and inclusion would look like.

EASI is a quality assurance programme supporting arts and cultural organisations meet standards in equality and access.

The 2021 engagement process takes a new learning and development approach to offer advice, guidance, training and accreditation to organisations that want to improve performance in equality and access. Some of the areas covered in the scheme are:

  • Appropriateness of the built environment
  • The knowledge and skills base of staff and volunteers
  • Recruitment and selection processes
  • Equality and access as applied to policies and procedures
  • Making art products / events accessible
  • Infection control and at-risk audiences

To recognise and promote the standard achieved; organisations will be awarded kite marked branding, a certificate and original artwork designed by a local artist.

The continuous process of improvement aims to motivate and assist organisations move along a pathway to reach and retain the highest level of achievement.

EASI complements the business case for disability equality. Assisting arts providers make practical steps to improve “accessibility” to premises, how information is conveyed and shaping attitudes and behaviours amongst those who deliver services. The scheme is based on quality assurance principles similar to programmes such as Investors in PeopleThe EASI unique aspects of usability testing by disabled assessors will ensure award recognition and impact continue to reflect disabled peoples access requirements and lived experience
