Plaster Casting Workshop with Model Citizen

Thursday 12th November, 2020

Starts: 7pm
Join the University of Atypical for our second event as part of ‘Accessing Architecture’ and spend an evening with Model Citizen.

We had hoped to have people in the gallery to take part in a one-off plaster casting session with architect/maker John Donnelly of ‘Model Citizen’ but we can’t right now!

Sooo we thought we would bring the workshop to you!

Register to take part in John’s workshop, and we will send you everything you will need to join us on Zoom. You will be sent all the ingredients needed to take part, apart from water and an old bowl. Each kit will be delivered in a cardboard box and your model will be made using a special non-toxic material that picks up a greater level of detail than standard gypsum.

We are grateful for the support of the National Lottery Heritage Fund in funding this programme.

Model making kit will be provided via post. Workshop will take place on Zoom.

About ‘Model Citizen’

Established by Architect John Donnelly in 2016, Model Citizen specialises in producing finely detailed plaster cast architectural model sculptures which explore the built environment of Ireland.

During his time studying Architecture at the Belfast School of Art, John explored the medium of using plaster and concrete to cast models during the design process and as finished models.

The University of Atypical is funded by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and Belfast City Council.

The work is inspired in part by the practice of forest bathing, or shinrin-yoku: a Japanese tradition of spending quiet, mindful time among trees. Research shows that this kind of intentional time in nature can reduce stress, improve mood, and even boost the immune system.
For many of us this kind of immersive experience can feel out of reach, especially during the colder months or in urban environments. This installation is a way to bring some of those benefits indoors: a moment of calm, light, and quiet connection.

Passages by Anushiya Sundaralingam

The boats’ delicate frameworks echo the human skeleton—structures that support yet fracture, heal, and hold history. This duality invites viewers to contemplate how displacement shapes the body and psyche alike.
