Our Projects

Sign Language and Deaf Awareness Programme

University of Atypical is a recipient of funding from the Sign Language Partnership Group through the Department for Communities. This enables us to offer much needed services:

  • Tailored Deaf Awareness training
  • British Sign Language classes
  • A programme of integrated British Sign Language interpretation across our programmes.

This programme is key to creating access to all our programmes for the d/Deaf community, as artists and as audience members.

Digital Horizon Masterclasses

Digital Horizon is a professional development programme. It supports people in the disability arts sector to pursue new ambitions using digital technology.

The Masterclasses are peer-led by d/Deaf, disabled or neurodivergent artists. These Masterclass Leaders are selected because of their personal experience, and because they have exceptional skills in their particular art form.

Since 2022, we have had Masterclasses on a wide range of topics: painting and making animation using digital devices; recording music using everyday devices and collaborating on music online; presenting for television using British Sign Language; composing soundtracks and making sonic art; using new technologies to organise your artistic life; creating an online community; using captions in creative ways; tapping the artistic potential of artificial intelligence.

Our Masterclass Leaders are doing exciting and innovative things with technology: Joel Simon, Kris Marsden, Asylum Arts, Paula Clarke, Peter Fleming, Conor McGinley, Grace Fairley, Sinead O’Neill McNicholl, Catherine Bourne, Porcelain Delaney, Ruth Fabby, Simon Jay.

The next round of Digital Horizon Masterclasses will take place in winter 2024.
