Creative Dance and Movement Masterclass – Helen Hall

Come and explore, create dance and movement with Helen. Helen will guide you through movement tasks to allow you to express your own unique way of moving. This will be a relaxed and fun workshop that will energise the body.

Helen is a dance artist based in Belfast, Northern Ireland. As someone with a visual impairment Helen is curious as to how her experience of interacting with the world around her may differ from others. It is this curiosity of the margins, and telling untold stories that intrigues her and often finds voice in her work. Helen creates and produces her own work including ‘Collecting Moments’, (commissioned by University of Atypical) performed at Bounce, 2021 and ‘Inside The Speaker’ (created from an  Unlimited commission’, performed at The Belfast Children’s Festival 2020, CQAF, 2018 and Bounce 2017. As well as creating her own performance work, she regularly collaborates with many Belfast based arts organisations to devise and deliver performance-based projects. One such organisation is Open Arts, where she is currently the choreographer for Luminous Soul, a contemporary dance company for dancers with disabilities.

What to wear – this session will be physical so wear something comfortable and participants are invited to work barefoot should you wish. Appropriate footwear is advisable.

A limited number of places are available, so booking is required.
Please let us know your access requirements when booking.

Song Of The Bones – VOKXEN

The story of Ireland’s last Witch Trial

‘The Song of the Bones’ is a piece of dark, immersive storytelling gig theatre; merging our electronic pop music with puppetry and spoken word poetry, to tell the tale of the Islandmagee Witch trials in 1711

Using elements of traditional Irish folk tales, mysticism, and feminism, the show was created by Claire McCartney & Beccy Henderson of VOKXEN, featuring spellbinding narratives by award-winning performance poet Alice McCullough, haunting puppetry by Claire Roi Harvey (Star Wars/The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance), and earthy musical percussion by David McLaughlin (The Blue Man Group).

The Songs of the Bones is part of the University of Atypical’s Bounce Arts Festival 2022 programme in collaboration with the Lyric Theatre.

Something for Nothing? – Jo Verrent

Don’t expect something for nothing (especially from disabled creatives)!
Sound familiar? ‘Could you just tell us how…?’ ‘Have you any contacts you could pass on?’ ‘Where can I find further info on that?’ ‘Could you pop by and tell us more?’
Disabled creatives are often asked to give advice, guidance, support and more for free, whether they are working for an organisation or freelance. How can we shift this situation so that there is always some form of exchange – financial or otherwise?
Come and find out more from a lively discussion determined to challenge and change the status quo.

Jo believes that ‘different’ is delicious, not divergent. She works in arts & culture at strategic levels embedding the belief that diversity adds texture, turning policy into real action.
Jo is the senior producer for Unlimited, the world’s largest commissions programme for disabled artists; delivered by Shape and Artsadmin, funded by ACE and others. She is an artist, creating Take Me to Bed with Luke Pell, and founded Sync with Sarah Pickthall, playing at the intersection of disability and leadership.
Jo is a Clore Fellow, on the Arts Council England Northern Advisory Panel and Disability Advisory Group, and on the board of The Space.
